How stackers work

When the printed sheet first enters the stacker, it is under the control of the printer until the printer cuts the paper and the tail of the sheet passes the nip of the printer exit roller. During this period, the stacker transport system passes the sheet through beam-forming rollers onto the stacker tray at the speed determined by the printer.

When the tail of the sheet is released by the printer, the sheet transport speed is increased automatically under the control of the stacker transport system to develop sufficient momentum for the tail to clear the stacking wall. Simply put, using an internal slip clutch system, the stacker transport speed is the same as the printer speed until the printer "lets go" of the print - then the stacker automatically speeds-up the print to accomplish stacking. It's not uncommon to see the drive roller on the exit side of the stacker 'stop or stall' during printing this is a normal operating condition.

Impressions or lines of the stacked document

This is a normal condition; the beam-forming rollers may cause temporary impressions in the paper and in most cases will dissipate in several hours.

Paper stalling under the curl reduction guide wheels

*For models that have curl reduction

  • Verify there is a gap between the curl reduction guide wheels and the plastic input bridge, if there is no gap, be sure the stacker is set to the proper height. See the Unpacking and Installation video. Check the belt tensioning spring, drive side of the transport (it should not be at max tension).
  • Check the voltage, fan side of the transport across Test Point TP3 & Test Point TP4 for 8V, (The transport needs to be running for this measurement).

Paper stalling in transport or very slow to exit

  • Make sure there is a gap between the plastic input guide and the curl reduction guide wheels, if there is no gap, be sure the stacker is set to the proper height. See the Unpacking and Installation video.
  • Check to see that the curl reduction guide wheels spin freely.

PC board voltage adjustment

Remove the transport from the stacker base. Set the transport on top of the stacker base. Connect your multi-meter to tp3 and tp4 on the PC board, set the meter to measure DC volts. Connect the power to the transport. To get a voltage reading you will need to actuate the paper entrance sensor with a sheet of paper. You should read 8 volts. Do not change the voltage from 8 volts.

Check the leaf spring tensions for proper adjustment. These are Factory Set and should not need to be adjusted. To check the adjustment you will need to order the Spring Gauge Kit Part Number RA-6568-1. If out of adjustment correct to factory settings.

Leaf Spring adjustment beam-forming and drive roller idlers

 Remove the transport from the stacker base. Remove the top cover from the transport. Using the Spring gauge kit, loop one end of the wire extension over the beam-forming roller idler shaft. Then hook the spring gauge to the other end of the wire extension and pull. The idler should lift off the beam-forming roller at 5oz of pull. This is the factory setting on all of the beam-forming roller idlers.

Remove the transport form the stacker base. Remove the top cover from the transport. Using the Spring Gauge kit, using the double loop end of the wire extension, put a loop over both sides of the drive roller idler shaft. Then hook the spring gauge to the other end of the wire extension and pull. The idler should lift off the drive roller at 12oz of pull. This is the factory setting of the drive roller idlers.

Transport not starting

  • Verify green power light is on. Check incoming power/replace power supply
  • Verify that the input sensor flag on the transport is not broken or damaged. (Remove transport top cover to inspect) If damaged or binding replace input sensor assembly.

Paper rolling over in catch tray

  • Put the secondary catch tray to the upper position (for models with a secondary catch tray).  
  • If still rolling over, the curl is out of spec and will not be able to be stacked. Replace paper in printer, or use paper with 3″ core.

Paper not properly stacking in catch tray

  • Raise or lower the secondary catch tray for better stacking.
  • If still not stacking. Replace paper in printer, or use paper with 3″ core.

Paper jamming in transport

  • Check for obstructions in the transport paper path. Clear obstruction.
  • Check that the paper is not snagging on the plastic bridges prior to entering the exit rolls.

If the paper is snagging, replace the damaged plastic bridges.
